3 Trends in Warehouse Management for 2022

31 May 2022

Discover the strategies that companies have adopted to increase efficiency and overcome the challenges of intralogistics management.

The variety of references, linked to the multiplicity of channels and the diversity of suppliers, has made warehouse management increasingly complex. To maintain a high degree of organization, accuracy, and predictability, it is necessary to apply best practices and rely on the help of technologies. In 2021, this will become even stronger, with the need to digitize operations to overcome challenges and unforeseen scenarios, as happened last year.

With the pandemic and its consequences on the market, companies have realized that excellence in inventory management is essential. Furthermore, many have sought to reduce costs, which is only possible with efficient warehouse management and the application of some sustainable actions.

In the year 2022, three points related to this scenario will enter warehouse management with full force. They are:

1 – Management Automation

The costs of maintaining a warehouse are high, so there is no reason to have inefficiencies in space usage, inventory organization, or task execution. Keeping an optimized operation is key to reducing expenses. In this sense, an increasing number of companies have automated their warehouses with a WMS system.

The use of a WMS allows the company to make the most of all its resources (labor, equipment, and area). Thanks to the software’s intelligence, the flow of goods in and out is optimized. The system also takes care of directing each product and stock rotation. Additionally, the WMS tracks all processes and provides real-time information. This way, managers always have valuable data at their fingertips to make assertive decisions.

WMS integrates warehouses into the logistics of the future by eliminating bureaucratic practices, removing repetitive manual activities, and eliminating human errors. The efficiency achieved ends up reflecting on consumer satisfaction, as deliveries are made quickly and accurately.

2 – Use of Robotic Devices

The use of robotic devices has grown significantly in the supply chain worldwide. According to Tractica Research, global sales of logistics robots are expected to reach $22.4 billion in 2021. Among these robotic devices for the supply chain are autonomous mobile robots (AMR), drones, automated guided vehicles (AGV), and automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS).

Until last year, the giant Amazon already had 26 of its distribution centers worldwide using robotics. Similarly, many companies have already adopted this innovation to speed up order processing and reduce costs. Recently, Alibaba invested $15 billion in robotic logistics infrastructure, and Google invested $500 million in automated logistics for JD.

And the trend is that more and more companies will adopt robots in their activities to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and, above all, offer a qualified service to their customers.

3 – Focus on Sustainability

Sustainability in logistics is a topic that has been widely discussed in recent years and continues to be a strong trend for 2022. Besides bringing benefits to us and the environment, it is a practice that reduces costs, promotes brand image, and increases customer loyalty as consumers approve of companies that prioritize environmental responsibility.

The adoption of sustainable practices, such as eliminating paper, using clean and renewable energy, adopting energy-efficient equipment, optimizing packaging, recycling, and reusing, including raising employee awareness, only adds value to the company. Green logistics adoption ensures that the company makes better use of its resources and becomes more economical, which is why a growing number of companies are adopting this sustainable approach in managing their warehouses.

The Warehouse of the Future

The three themes mentioned lead us towards a future that has already arrived. With all the transformations that took place last year, there has been an acceleration in the digitization of warehouses. And this is transforming the relationship with the consumer. By investing more and more in technology, market leaders are able to offer unparalleled service to their customers, which puts pressure on other companies to follow suit.

The global market continues to expand. And the companies that already understand that logistics is the heart of the business will surely emerge victorious. Those who prioritized efficient warehouse management, adopting good practices and relying on technological support, have already accumulated positive results. We remind you, therefore: it’s time to change your warehouse!
